The Friedrich-Loeffler-Institute (FLI) of Germany, one of the world's premier animal disease research institutions, has joined the Global Avian Influenza Network for Surveillance of wild birds. FLI has been deeply involved with wild birds surveillance for HPAI H5N1 and has offered to provided laboratory diagnostic support for international wild bird surveillance efforts being coordinated by GAINS. The Friedrich-Loeffler-Institute, Federal Research Institute for Animal Health is an independent higher federal authority affiliated with the German Federal Ministry for Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection. It does research in the field of infectious animal diseases of farmed animals and related sciences. The FLI fulfils the tasks assigned to it by the Animal Diseases Act, publishes research results and cooperates with scientists and scientific institutions in Germany and worldwide.
