MINISTRY OF AGRICULTURE & MARINE RESOURCES P. O. Box N-3028 Nassau, The Bahamas Fax: 322 1767 Date: July 2, 2007 Press Release REPORTS OF DEAD SEABIRDS ON THE COAST OF THE ISLAND OF GRAND BAHAMA, THE BAHAMAS Reports of dead seabirds on the coast of the island of Grand Bahama have been investigated and the Department of Agriculture has confirmed that a limited number of dead seabirds were found on the southeastern coast of Grand Bahama. Initial reports originating from Freeport, Grand Bahama detailing large numbers of dead seabirds could not be confirmed as most reports indicated that the birds were sighted at sea. A veterinary officer dispatched to Grand Bahama confirmed a limited number of birds on the southeastern coast of that island. Specimens collected were found in various conditions ranging from advanced states of decomposition to weak and emaciated birds. Postmortem examinations indicated empty stomachs and general emaciation. Preliminary tests for influenza were negative. The cause of death remains undetermined at this time. These findings are consistent with similar reports from the east coast of Florida where similar sightings of dead and weakened sea birds have been reported. Members of the public are cautioned against the handling of carcasses of dead and weakened birds or any animals for that matter, particularly when the cause of illness or death is not known.
